The
Mid-Columbia Community Forestry Council is encouraging area residents to
nominate big trees of any species, big or small, for their Big Tree Search.
You may nominate a city park or street tree, as well as a tree of your
own. You can even nominate a
neighbor's tree if you have their permission.
Big Trees don't have to be "big" trees, but can be the largest
of their particular species, such as a flowering dogwood or a Japanese maple.
Entering
the Big Tree Search is as easy as 1-2-3.
Step
One...
call the Kennewick Extension
office at 735-3551 and ask to be sent a nomination brochure. Once you receive
it, fill out the blanks on the back of the brochure. You'll be asked to measure
the circumference (in inches) at a height of 4.5 feet of the tree you are
nominating. You'll also be asked for the average diameter of the crown and the
estimated height of the tree.
Step
Two... detach the form.
Step
Three... add a stamp and mail it to the council ( Mid-Columbia Community Forestry Council
5600-E West Canal Place Kennewick, WA 99336). After your form is received, a member of the Council will
contact you and set up a time to meet with you to confirm your measurements and
photograph your tree.
Past generations of
citizens put in a lot of hard work to establish the trees and parks we now
enjoy. Celebrate their gift to us
by helping the Mid-Columbia Community Forestry Council find this area's
"Big Trees." Good Hunting!
